Tiny preemie hat (Crocheted)

This is a little hat suitable for Upon Butterfly Wings...I love it because it's so quick to work up, which means more hats for tiny babies.

It's written in British Crochet terms, if you're used to using American terms, just substitute tr for DC (it's a fairly simply pattern)

Round 1: Ch3, sl st into 3rd chain from hook to form loop.
Round 2: Ch 2 (this is your first treble crochet), work 11 tr into loop, join round using sl st into your first tr. (12 st in round)
Round 3: Ch2, [tr in next st, 2 tr in next stitch] 6 times, join round using sl st into your first tr. (18st)
Round 4: Ch2, [tr in next 2 sts, 2 tr in next stitch] 6 times, join round using sl st into your first tr. (24st)
Round 5-7: Ch2, tr in each st around,  join round using sl st into your first tr. (24st)

Fasten off and sew in the ends.

If you're wanting a slightly bigger hat, you can add an extra increase round after Round 4 {Ch2, [tr in next 3 sts, 2 tr in next stitch] 6 times, join round using sl st into your first tr. (36st)}

Preemie Hat; plain with ribbed edge (Knitted)

This pattern is knitted in the round on DPNs and, if you're comfortable using them, the hat is a fast knit (with no seams to sew at the end!)

There's no need to worry about gauge as premature babies are all different; whatever your gauge, your finished hat will fit an angel.

Materials:
Baby DK yarn (in your choice of colour)
1 set 4mm DPNs
Yarn needle

Directions:
Cast on 36 sts, place 12sts on each needle.

Join the round, being careful not to twist the stitches as you do. You can, if you wish, place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round but I just use the tail from casting on as a marker.

Round 1: (K1, P1) around

Repeat this pattern until piece measures just over 1cm (1/2")

Next round: Knit all stitches

Repeat this pattern until piece measures 5cm (2")

Next round: (K2, K2tog) around

Next round: Knit all stitches

Next round: (K1, K2tog) around

Next round: (K2tog) around

Next round: K1, K2tog around

Cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail. Thread tail through yarn needle, slip remaining stitches onto it, then pull tightly. Weave in ends.
